Trey Gowdy is a former federal prosecutor, television news host, and politician from the United States. From 2011 to 2019, he represented South Carolina’s 4th congressional district in the US Congress. Gowdy formerly worked for the Seventh Judicial Circuit in South Carolina as a solicitor and federal prosecutor. He presided over the House Select Committee on Benghazi from 2014 to 2016, which looked into Hillary Clinton’s personal email server.

Gowdy declared on January 31, 2018, that he will not run for reelection in 2018 and that he would instead focus on his legal practice. He was appointed anchor of Sunday Night in America with Trey Gowdy later that year after serving as an interim host of Fox News Primetime in early 2021. Republican U.S. Congressman Bob Inglis declared his intention to run in the Republican primary for the 4th congressional district of South Carolina in 2009. Inglis had adopted more moderate positions than those he had held when representing the district from 1993 to 1999, even though the American Conservative Union had given him a 93% lifetime rating. In the 2010 primary, Gowdy was one of several contenders who performed admirably to Inglis’ right. Inglis lost to Gowdy 70-30% in the run-off election.
Gowdy challenged Democrat Deb Morrow for reelection to a second term. In redistricting after the 2010 census, Gowdy ran against 26-year-old lawyer Chris Fedalei, a Democrat, and won 67% of the vote to keep his seat. Because of his experience as a federal prosecutor, Gowdy was regarded as one of the GOP’s most competent and adaptable legal experts throughout his time in Congress.
Gowdy voted against the final debt ceiling agreement during the 2011 US debt ceiling crisis and opposed Speaker John Boehner’s debt limit plan. Citing worries about the possibility of Americans being detained without trial on the grounds of national security, he also opposed the 2011 defense authorization bill. He stated to Congressional Quarterly in December 2010 that he would only back a bill if its sponsor could prove that the Constitution granted the government the authority to take action in a certain area.
Gowdy was a member of the Committee on Education and the Workforce, the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, and the Committee on the Judiciary. He regularly addressed the House floor on topics ranging from his support for the extension of the Violence Against Women Act to Operation Fast and Furious. In 2012, the financially conservative 501(c)4 group Club for Growth presented him with the Defender of Economic Freedom award.
Gowdy is a staunch social conservative who identifies as “pro-life plus” and thinks that the approach should go beyond simply waiting for the Supreme Court to reexamine Roe v. Wade. Defunding, repealing, and replacing the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, limiting US EPA regulations, reforming the federal tax system, passing a balanced budget amendment, and ending earmarks are the goals of the Contract from America, which he signed.
Gowdy contested President Trump’s claim in May 2018 that the FBI had spied on his 2016 campaign. As a result, several Trump supporters assailed Gowdy.Speaker Paul Ryan publicly defended Gowdy in June 2018, stating that Gowdy’s judgment was “accurate.”
During a congressional hearing in July 2018, Gowdy alleged that FBI agent Peter Strzok had acted improperly, claiming that Strzok had exhibited bias against Donald Trump and in favor of Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential election. According to Strzok, the inquiry into him and the rhetoric he and the Republicans used was misguided and contributed to “our enemies’ campaign to tear America apart.”
Gowdy presented the ENFORCE the Law Act of 2014 to the House on March 4, 2014. In the event that the executive branch fails to enforce a federal law, the measure would allow the US Senate and US House of Representatives to challenge the US President in a federal district court to get the law clarified.
