Later, he switched to Florida Championship Wrestling, where he faced Harry Smith for the FCW Southern Heavyweight Championship. After losing the match against Harry Smith, Murdoch was released on February 4, 2008, despite losing the championship.

After leaving WWE in 2010, Murdoch rejoined FCW under the moniker Brodus Clay, which was a parody of Snoop Dogg’s true name. On December 14, 2010, he made his NXT in-ring debut by defeating both his mentor Chris Masters and Byron Saxton. On January 25, he won a four-way elimination match, which gave him the authority to select Alberto Del Rio as the next Pro.

On March 7, Clay made his Raw debut as Del Rio’s new bodyguard following his time in NXT, defying solo battles against Christian and Edge. When Del Rio faced Edge in WrestleMania XXVII, he went with him. On April 25, Clay stayed on SmackDown as Del Rio was drafted to Raw.

On May 1, 2011, at Extreme Rules, Clay made his last appearance with Del Rio by interfering on his behalf during a ladder match between Del Rio and Christian for the unclaimed World Heavyweight Championship. On August 4, 2011, Clay made a comeback after a three-month hiatus to film the film No One Lives. He defeated Pat Silva and proceeded to defeat other jobbers on Superstars.

Clay’s comeback to television was first promoted by WWE in November 2011, however it wasn’t until January 2012. Management told Clay that he will be playing a figure with a dancing face who goes by the moniker “The Funkasaurus.” He used dance moves and gyrations to win squash matches on Raw and SmackDown.

By leaving Tensai to lose their tag match and attacking Tensai after the match, Clay finished his heel turn on Raw. He didn’t have any quick success, losing singles matches to Tensai, Woods, and Truth.
