Al Roker Career

Roker served as a weather anchor for CBS affiliate WHEN-TV (currently WTVH) in Syracuse, New York from 1974 until 1976, while he became enrolled at SUNY Oswego. Through his time in Oswego, he as well DJ’d at the campus radio station, WNYO. Adding to the completion of his studies, he moved to Washington, D.C. and took a weathercasting position at independent station WTTG, later owned by Metromedia, remaining there for much of the next two years.

His career with NBC started in 1978 when he was hired at WKYC in Cleveland, then an NBC owned-and-operated station. After a period of five years in Cleveland, he became promoted to the network’s flagship outlet, WNBC-TV in his hometown. Roker later moved to New York City in late 1983 as a weekend weathercaster, and within eight months was the station’s regular weeknight weathercaster. In addition, Roker replaced 27-year WNBC-TV veteran Dr. Frank Field, who as well left the network over a contract dispute.

Roker earned wider exposure when David Letterman asked him to join in an elevator race on an episode of the talk show Late Night along with David Letterman, which also taped across the hall from the WNBC news studio in the GE Building. Moreover, this led to Roker becoming the forecaster for Weekend Today. Besides, he substituted on the weekday edition of Today when Willard Scott became ill or away.
