Newton was born in New Haven, Connecticut, to parents Thomas Newton and Jennifer Newton (née Chase), a violinist and the daughter of composer and arranger Bruce Chase. She has Scottish, English, Czech, Norwegian, and French ancestry. Actress Sienna Miller’s first cousin, once removed, is Newton.[2]
Her older brother, Matt Newton, is also an actor. In Ugly Betty’s fourth and last season, he frequently appeared as Marc St. James’s boyfriend, Troy. Her aunt Stephanie Chase plays the classical violin, and her mother, Jennifer, is also an artist.

Newton played Amanda Tanen in the ABC comedy-drama series Ugly Betty from 2006 to 2010 and co-hosted the podcast with co-star Michael Urie. She also co-starred in the web series Mode After Hours on ABC.com. In 2009, Newton appeared in Jerry Zaks’ production of the Gershwin musical Girl Crazy at New York City Center Encores! Alongside her real-life husband, Chris Diamantopoulos. In 2011, Newton played the lead role in Love Bites, with Cindy Chupack as executive producer. The show is canceled after a midseason due to Newton’s pregnancy announcement, co-star Jordana Spiro’s contractual obligation, and Chupack’s departure.
In 2011, Newton plays as Quinn Garvey, Barney Stinson’s love interest, on the CBS television show How I Met Your Mother. She also appeared in the Fox comedy series The Goodwin Games in 2013 and a recurring role on the HBO TV series Divorce in 2018. In 2019, Newton and Urie will collaborate on the CBS and Warner Bros. Television sitcom project Fun, co-starring, and co-executive producing alongside the show’s creator Michael Patrick King and fellow Ugly Betty showrunners Tracy Poust and Jon Kinnally.
In February 2021, Newton will take over for Kiele Sanchez in the Netflix original series The Lincoln Lawyer, playing Lorna Taylor, Mickey Haller’s second ex-wife and office manager, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as Haller himself.
