Nielsen made her feature film debut in Jerry Lewis’s French film Par où t’es rentré? On t’a pas vu sortir in 1984. She also appeared in the Italian films Vacanze di Natale ’91 and Le Paradis Absolument in 1993. Afterwards, she relocated to the United States where she had her first major English-language film debut in 1997 as Christabella Andreoli in The Devil’s Advocate.
This initial little success led to her appearances in the films Permanent Midnight, Rushmore, and Soldier. Additionally, she starred as Lucilla in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator in 2000, alongside Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix. She has since appeared in American films such as Mission to Mars, One Hour Photo, and The Hunted for which she had to have most of her hair shaved off.
Moreover, she also appeared in Olivier Assayas’s 2002 French film Demonlover. In A Shine of Rainbows (2009), she portrayed an orphaned Irish mother. Most notably, she made her Danish film debut in the drama Brothers in 2004, for which she won both the Danish Best Actress Award, and Best Actress at the San Sebastian International Film Festival.
Furthermore, she appears as Detective Dani Beck in many episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 2006. In addition, in 2015, she appeared on the TV-2 album Det gode liv where she sang along with Steffen Brandt on the track “Brev til Mona”. In September 2018 she appeared in the pilot episode of the CBS drama FBI with Jeremy Sisto and Missy Peregrym.
