Her journey in the entertainment industry began as a teenager when she appeared in the 1986 NBC sitcom The Cosby Show. Following this, she graced various sitcoms as a guest star, including the well-known Family Matters. In 1995, Essence had a significant role in the first African-American soap opera, Under One Roof, alongside James Earl Jones and Vanessa Bell Calloway.

Her TV career continued to soar as she co-starred in the short-lived NBC teen soap opera, Malibu Shores, in 1996, alongside Keri Russell. A notable appearance was her role in the Saved by the Bell spin-off, Saved by the Bell: The College Years, although her character was eventually written out when Tiffani-Amber Thiessen decided to return to the show.

From 1997 to 1999, Essence Atkins portrayed the character of Tasha Yvette Henderson, the older sister, in the WB sitcom Smart Guy. Between 2002 and 2006, she took on the role of Dee Dee Thorne, her half-sister, in the UPN sitcom Half & Half, sharing the screen with Rachel True.

Not confined to television, Essence also ventured into the world of cinema. She had supporting roles in various films, including How High (2001), Save Us from Eva (2003) alongside Gabrielle Union, and Dance Flick (2009).
