Exene’s Career
Cervenka first encountered musician John Doe during a poetry workshop at the Beyond Baroque Foundation in Venice, California, where she began working. This led to the formation of the band X in 1977 by Billy Zoom (guitar), John Doe (bass and vocals), and D.J. Bonebrake (drummer).
Furthermore, Doe invited Cervenka to join as a co-lead vocalist, and together they became the band’s main songwriters. Moreover, Their debut album, “Los Angeles,” surfaced in 1980, followed by five more albums in the following six years. During this time, she also picked up guitar skills from Dave Alvin of The Blasters.
In 1982, Cervenka initiated her writing career by publishing “Adulterers Anonymous,” the first of a four-book series co-created with artist Lydia Lunch. They collaborated on a spoken word album called “Rude Hieroglyphics” in 1996 and toured together for the project. Between 1996 and 1999, Cervenka co-owned a Los Angeles store called “You’ve Got Bad Taste” with John Roecker, specializing in kitschy and unconventional novelties.
Transitioning to Exene Červenková in 1999, she featured in the video “Decoupage 2000: Return of the Goddess” alongside guests Karen Black and the band L7. The video showcased her reading of the poem “They Must Be Angels” and an interview skit with Decoupage 2000 hostess Summer Caprice.
In 2005, Cervenka’s personal journals and mixed media collages were exhibited in a solo show titled “America the Beautiful” at the Santa Monica Museum of Art, curated by Kristine McKenna and Michael Duncan. This exhibition expanded its presence in January 2006 at DCKT Contemporary in New York.
