Lessens is a well-known meteorologist who established a weather club to track storms and tornadoes when he was a kid. On his 21st birthday, a minor tornado rocked his hometown in the early morning hours. The Lowell Showboat was destroyed, as was a church steeple, and the neighbouring village was seriously damaged.
Additionally, he survived a ‘derecho’ windstorm in a van parked beneath a highway bridge flyover over the July 4, 1991 holiday weekend. Similarly, he spent 12 hours at 13 ON YOUR SIDE studios reporting another “derecho” that struck West Michigan. Throughout his time at 13 ON YOUR SIDE, he has been recognised and awarded with various honours.
Furthermore, in March 2009, he earned the National Association of Television Arts and Sciences’ “Silver Circle” award for 25 years or more of service. He’s also a nine-time winner of the Michigan Association of Broadcasters’ “Best Weathercast” award. Moreover, he also won Michigan Emmy Awards for Weather in 2005 and 2009.
