Jane Fraser’s Career

Fraser joined McKinsey & Company in 1994, where she worked in financial services and global strategy until becoming a partner. During this time, she worked in New York for the first six years and in London for the last four. She published papers on globalisation and co-wrote the 1999 book Race for the World: Strategies for Building a Great Global Firm with three other McKinsey workers.

Additionally, she travelled to China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, and India to interview McKinsey clients about their worldwide difficulties as part of her research for the book. Citigroup executive Michael Klein spent several years persuading her to join the firm, which she did in 2004. She joined Citigroup’s investment and global banking division in July 2004 as Head of Client Strategy.

Moreover, she was elevated to Global Head of Strategy and Mergers & Acquisitions in October 2007, a post she held until May 2009. Most notably, she was appointed CEO of Citi Private Bank in June 2009. The bank was running an annual deficit of around $250 million when she was promoted; it returned to profitability during her four-year tenure.

Furthermore, she was asked to take over as CEO of CitiMortgage in May 2013. Despite the fact that she understood the relocation might jeopardise her career, she welcomed the challenge. Her tenure as CEO of Citigroup’s mortgage division coincided with a downturn in demand for mortgage refinancing across the board.
