He was raised in suburban Lake Forest, Illinois, until he was 11 years old, when his family relocated to a tiny farm in Loganville, Georgia. Chandler’s mother raised Great Danes as show dogs; as a child, he accompanied his parents to dog shows and helped out at their dog boarding kennel. Chandler’s widowed mother maintained Sheenwater Kennels to support him and his brothers.

Peter Berg, who was working on the television series Friday Night Lights, met actor Chandler in 2005. Following the lives of a high school football coach, his family, and players in a tiny Texas town, the series is based on Buzz Bissinger’s book and the movie. While on Christmas vacation in 2005, Chandler was cast as Eric Taylor, the high school football coach.

Although the show’s pilot ran on NBC in 2006, it was in danger of being canceled every year. In 2011, the last season concluded. Berg still did not want Chandler to portray Coach Taylor, even though he had changed his mind and was now ideal for the part. Chandler’s performance in the last season earned him the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. In addition, he appeared in movies such as The Kingdom (2007) and The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008).
