Sedgwick began her career in television in 1982, where she starred as Julia Shearer in the soap opera Another World. She later appeared in the TV film Miss Rose, as a Jewish immigrant who accepts her ancestry. In addition, the film won an Emmy Award due to her well played role in the show.
Additionally, she also portrayed Brenda Leigh Johnson in the television series The Closer. It is know that she produced the TNT television series Proof, which debuted in 2015 but only ran for one season. Similarly, she also starred in several other movies including, Heart and Souls, Singles, and Something to Talk About.
Moreover, she also starred alongside her husband in the shows, The Woodsman and Pirates. Afterward, she directed the TV film Story of a Girl based on its 2007 novel by Sara Zarr. Some of the stars in the movie include her husband, Kevin Bacon and her daughter Sosie Bacon.
Furthermore, she appeared as Aunt Julia in the season 2 of the drama series The Summer I Turned Pretty. More so, she also took the lead role of Jean Raines in the comedy film ,My Village. On May 21, 2020, ABC authorised the rebranding of My Village as Call Your Mother for the 2020–2021 TV season.
