Harf started out as an analyst specializing on Middle Eastern leadership issues at the CIA’s Directorate of Intelligence. Later on, she was appointed CIA’s media spokesperson. She was a campaign spokesman on national security matters and reportedly contributed to the development of U.S. President Barack Obama’s communications and national security strategy during the 2012 presidential election. Harf served as Chuck Hagel’s press spokeswoman during his confirmation as Secretary of Defense following Obama’s reelection to a second term in office. Under Jen Psaki, Harf was named Deputy Spokesperson for the Department of State in June 2013.

After a video of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians being beheaded in Libya was released the day before by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), Harf’s interview on Hardball with Chris Matthews on February 16, 2015, sparked outrage. When Matthews questioned Harf about the U.S. plan against ISIS, Harf responded, “We cannot kill our way out of this war.” In the medium to long term, we must address the underlying factors that drive individuals to join these groups, whether it’s a lack of employment opportunities, whether…” The hashtag “#JobsForISIS” was used by her detractors to mock her on social media, and it quickly rose to the top 10 trending topics on Twitter in the United States.

In April 2015, Bloomberg News announced that Acting Spokesperson Marie Harf, who had also interviewed for the role, will be replaced as the Department of State’s spokesperson by retiring U.S. Navy Rear Admiral John Kirby. Under Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, Kirby was chosen over Harf in 2013 to serve as the spokeswoman for the U.S. Department of Defense.

Harf continued to manage the communications strategy for the Iran nuclear negotiations while serving as Acting Spokesperson until May 13, 2015. On June 1, 2015, she started a new position as Secretary of State John Kerry’s Senior Advisor for Strategic Communications.

She quit her job with the US government in January 2017 to work as a political analyst for Fox News Channel. Harf quit Fox News in May 2019 to assist on the presidential campaign of Representative Seth Moulton. She was appointed Executive Director of the progressive Serve America PAC, which was started by Seth Moulton, when Rep. Moulton halted his campaign. In September 2019, she made a comeback as a Fox News contributor.
