Vieira started her broadcasting career in 1975 as well as a news announcer for WORC radio in Worcester, Massachusetts, doing afternoon drive news through the B. J. Dean Show. In addition, she started a career in television serving as a local reporter and anchor at WJAR-TV in Providence, later making her way into the newsroom at WCBS-TV in New York City where she became an investigative reporter from 1979 to 1982.
Furthermore, Vieira first gained national recognition as a CBS reporter located in its Chicago bureau from 1982 to 1984. Later, she became a correspondent for nationwide news-magazine shows such as West 57th (1985–89) and 60 Minutes (1989–91). Likewise, her final assignment at CBS was as co-anchor of the CBS Morning News (1992–93).
Vieira later moved to ABC initially as one of six known correspondents for the news-magazine show Turning Point (1994–99), and was besides the host of the Lifetime Network’s show Intimate Portrait, which debuted on January 3, 1995, and also ran till August 28, 2004.
