For 18 months, Shannon suffered from excruciating eye discomfort. She set her alarm several times during the night and relied on eye drops for relief. She used Restasis eye drops for dry eye treatment after a doctor was unable to identify her issue. She was advised to keep taking Restasis, though, and to stop exaggerating. Bream saw internet posts of people contemplating suicide because she was so worn out from the suffering.
Bream found recommendations for Dr. Thomas Clinch, a corneal specialist, while looking for answers. The primary issue, as determined by Dr. Clinch, was Map-dot-fingerprint dystrophy, sometimes referred to as Cogan’s dystrophy. The outer layer of the cornea adheres to the lower layers due to corneal erosion brought on by tiny scratches on the cornea.
During Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, the epithelium scrapes off, exposing nerves and producing pain. Bream never had the opportunity to recuperate from the corneal trauma, therefore it was never able to fully recover.
In order to help Bream’s eyes retain moisture, Dr. Clinch recommended eye drops, tear duct plugs, and Muro 128 ointment. For the first time in more than a year, Bream slept for eight hours straight while her eyes progressively healed. Bream uses Muro 128 regularly and has little to no symptoms of her eye problem these days. Although the problem is easier to treat, it will reoccur infrequently.
