Amber’s Career

Amber started her comedy journey with local theater and improv in Omaha in 2001. During a Chicago event with her improv troupe, she met Charna Halpern, owner of iO Theater, who encouraged her to pursue comedy full-time in Chicago.

After completing her classes at iO in 2008, She headed to Amsterdam, where she became a writer and performer for the improv comedy troupe Boom Chicago Amsterdam. Upon returning to the United States, she joined The Second City in Denver and Chicago, where she met her future co-writer Jenny Hagel.

In 2011, she moved to Los Angeles, became part of the YouTube comedy group RobotDown, and appeared on an episode of Key & Peele. She also joined the sketch and musical comedy troupe Story Pirates, performing sketches based on kids’ stories. Ruffin was a member of Sacred Fools Theater Company, co-writing and starring in “King of Kong: A Musical Parody.”

2013-2022

In 2013, Ruffin auditioned for Saturday Night Live amidst criticism for lacking Black women in its cast. Amber didn’t make it but was later hired by Seth Meyers to write for his late-night show, where she still works today.

Beyond writing, Ruffin appears in recurring segments on Late Night with Seth Meyers, including “Amber Says What?”, “Amber’s Minute of Fury,” and “Jokes Seth Can’t Tell.” Moreover, addressed police brutality during George Floyd protests and was interviewed as a guest on the show’s 1,000th episode.

Ruffin also contributed to Comedy Central’s Detroiters and narrated Drunk History. She developed a comedy series, “Going Dutch,” and hosted the 70th Writers Guild of America awards ceremony in 2018. She wrote for A Black Lady Sketch Show and co-authored the book “You’ll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey: Crazy Stories about Racism” with her sister.

In addition, Amber launched her late-night talk show, “The Amber Ruffin Show,” on NBC’s Peacock, featuring topical sketches instead of traditional interviews. The show received Writers Guild of America nominations in 2021 and Emmy nominations in 2022.

Furthermore, Ruffin co-wrote the Broadway-bound musical adaptation of “Some Like It Hot” and earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Book of a Musical in 2021. In September 2022, she was announced as the voice actor for Purple, the new spokescandy for M&M’s.
