Aron Ralston Accident
Ralston was canyoneering alone in Bluejohn Canyon in eastern Wayne County, Utah, just south of the Horseshoe Canyon area of Canyonlands National Park, in April 2003. A dangling boulder loosened when he was climbing down from it while he was descending the bottom parts of the slot canyon. The boulder smashed his left hand on the canyon wall before crushing his right hand.
Most notably, his efforts were useless since he couldn’t remove his arm from the 800 lb (360 kg) chockstone. After three days of attempting to lift and shatter the boulder, planned to amputate his trapped arm at a spot on the mid-forearm in order to escape. On the fourth day, he realised that in order to liberate his arm, he would have to cut through the bones in it, but the tools he had were insufficient.
Moreover, he used his multi-tool to amputate his forearm, using the dull 2-inch (50 mm) knife and pliers for the tougher tendons. After freeing himself, he climbed out of the slot canyon, rappelled down a 65-foot (20-meter) sheer cliff, and trekked out one-handed. In addition, he came across a family who gave him food and drink after a 6 mile (9.7 kilometres) slog.
Furthermore, in order for his arm to be retrieved, the boulder had to be moved with the help of 13 men, a winch, and a hydraulic jack. Afterwards, his arm was then cremated, and the ashes were given to Ralston. Six months later, he went to the accident site to film a show for NBC’s Dateline television network on the incident.
