She was cast in The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean, a John Huston film starring Paul Newman, in 1970. This led to her being nominated for a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer.
Additionally, writer John Milius expanded her character based on the favourable reception to her acting work. Warren Cowan flew in during this time, introduced himself, and offered to represent her for free in the upcoming year. Later, she starred in the obscene comedy The Naked Ape (1973), which Hugh Hefner, the publisher of Playboy magazine, helped to co-finance.
Moreover, she made an appearance in Naked Ape in 1973 and promoted the movie by appearing nude in Playboy’s September 1973 edition. Notably, she was chosen to star in the popular disaster movie Earthquake in 1974. It is know that she defeated Kay Lenz and Susan Sarandon to land the supporting role of Rosa Amici.
Furthermore, she made the decision to cut off her waist-length brown hair, dye it black, and have it styled like an Afro before her third call-back audition. Her audacious resolve to emulate the character both shocked and touched the director, Mark Robson. The movie became the highest-grossing film of the time and was nominated for two Golden Globes and four Academy Awards.
